Chiropractic Adjustments and Immune Health

A question that we get at the office, especially at this time of year, is: “I’m sick, should I cancel my appointment.” As much as we do not want you to come in and pass the illness to others, research shows that getting adjusted can get you better faster and keep you from getting sick again.

The Research: An adjustment has been found to decrease cortisol levels and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines, preventing immune system burnout. It also can facilitate better circulation and lymphatic drainage, assisting the body in removing toxins and waste from the body caused from the debris left behind from the killing of the virus or bacteria. Studies indicate that chiropractic care can lead to increased white blood cell counts (such as CD4 cells) and enhanced immune response.

In summary: a chiropractic adjustment gives the immune system a shot of white blood cells to increase your body’s immune response, decreases the stress hormone Cortisol, thus keeping the Immune System healthier and finally aids the body in clearing the waste created by the destruction of the virus or bacteria.

Even better news is, the immune-boosting effects of chiropractic are cumulative, meaning that regular care leads to fewer illnesses and better long-term health, particularly for those with chronic conditions.

To answer the initial question, research shows that coming in when you are not feeling well can get you better faster and keep you from getting sick again.
